Best Eco Lodges in Madagascar
Below you'll find the best Madagascar eco lodges and Madagascar eco resorts.

Tsara Komba Lodge, Madagascar

Tsara Komba Lodge is a caring luxury ecolodge located right in an amazing nature reserve, primary forest with endemic fauna and flora south of the island of Nosy Komba (also known as lemur island) and only 25 minutes away from Nosy Be by boat. Nosy Komba is a superb island covered with a luxuriant primal forest. Its gentle breeze, bird songs, fine sandy beaches and turquoise sea make this an unforgettable paradise. This eco lodge offers only 8 bungalows which blend in perfectly with the unspoiled natural environment and guarantee privacy.

We love: Getting away from it all, the amazing snorkeling, looking for the black lemurs and chameleons on the island; visiting the village of Ampangorina where the women embroider tablecloths and the men produce woodcarvings; tasting the delicious home grown mango mille feuilles made by Vincent Leroux, a former chef for Michelin starred Establishments.

Eco Friendly Highlights:

The island of Nosy Komba is situated among one of the world's richest ecosystems.Tsara Komba Lodge uses solar boilers to warm water and also use low voltage lighting. This eco lodge maintains best practices such as recycling (with schemes in place to recycle metal, plastics and packaging as well as household waste) and the use of environmentally friendly materials (such as commercially grown wood and local plants, etc).
Water is carefully is drawn from a water source and wastewater undergoes natural filtering and is used to irrigate the gardens, which are also fertilized with compost produced on site.
Tsara Komba Lodge is increasing their educational efforts among local people to encourage them to break the cycle of deforestation, (slash-and-burn farming )and recommending less destructive farming methods to them.

They purchase fish, seafood, local materials and plants locally on a daily basis. Almost all of the employees live in the neighboring village. Their salaries and the social benefits accompanying these have a major impact on the village's economy on an island on which employers are extremely rare. Tsara Komba Lodge provide their employees with high-quality training and payment of their health treatment by setting up a health fund just for the hotel, in addition to the local social services already available. Thanks to their micro-loan scheme, they finance pirogue boats so vital to island fishing or the transportation of goods and people. This eco lodge also support the nearby village of Antrema by rebuilding homes with local architectural styles, installing a water conveyance system, supplying mosquito nets, building toilet blocks and subsequently facilitating access to health care and education with the construction of a school and finally library.

Chez Arol Ecolodge, Madagascar

Chez Arol ecolodge is huddled in the heart of the largest national park of Madagascar, between a primary tropical forest and a preserved lagoon. Biodiversity is exceptional in Masoala and many species are endemic. The ecolodge is located within less than two hours of boat from Maroantsetra. Its nine bungalows built with local materials are perfectly integrated with the landscape and offer real comfort in the heart of a green paradise.

We love:
Spotting the magnificent Red Ruffed Lemur, finding out about local beliefs and traditional medicines through botanical paths, discovering the Betsimisarakas culture in the small village of Ambodiforaha where women sing and dance to connect with nature...

Eco Friendly Highlights:
Chez Arol Ecolodge offers spring water through a simple gravitation system that does not use any energy. A Medair-approved water filter provides water to the restaurant. Used waters are conditioned in EU standard septic tanks and then discharged into soak pits or below ground level through drains. Solid wastes are sorted out. Organic materials are sent to compost while non recyclable materials are compacted. To compensate for the carbon footprint generated by the boat journey to Masoala National Park, Chez Arol Ecolodge commits to planting a tree with each client, together with local school children.Chez Arol Ecolodge is funding the village's primary school to raise awareness on the importance of environment protection and to help local children to obtain a qualification on the medium term. More than 50% of the Ecolodge staff are coming from the neighbouring villages. To allow for food self-sufficiency, a rice production improvement program has been initiated by the Lodge, following two steps: implementation of micro dams to regulate irrigation and teaching of SRI techniques (Improved Rice growing System). To promote local culture and generate income for the Association of Women of Ambodiforaha, Chez Arol Ecolodge has produced a CD of traditional Malagasy songs.
