Saadani Safari Eco Lodge is the only one within the park Saadani where its nine tented cottages are hidden on a tranquil beach overlooking the Indian Ocean. This Ecolodge uses Solar Panels & Wind Power for electricity and has built a wind powered water pump which allows the villagers to have clean fresh water.
Sadaani eco lodge recently set up a separate non-profit company called SANA dedicated to implement sustainable practices in tourism as well helping the local communities.
They are working on the development of a community lodge and have purchased an unbelievable site just outside one of the last remaining lowland coastal forests, this area is plagued by charcoal and pineapple farming. The lodge they are building is almost 100% ecologically sound (natural materials collected from waste on site, cooking using bio-gas or sustainable charcoal etc) and are training the local community to run and manage it for their own benefit. Their aim is to provide this community with a source of income so that they understand the importance of protecting forests as well as providing support to wildlife habitats.
As part of this project they have taken various initiatives:
Educational sponsorship:
Sana sponsors the total number of 11 students at Saadani, Kilaro and Matipwili secondary school. The help of Sana goes to the students with ability and will to study but hindered by difficult situations as a cause of poverty of family breakdown.
Provision of sustainable technology:
The program involves production of sustainable charcoal, biogas, water harvesting and usage of solar to begin with. They are building a sustainable charcoal kiln so that the staff can cook in a sustainable source. They also have developed a bio-gas unit that creates a cooking gas from the fermented left over from the kitchen.
