Bird Island Eco Lodge

Bird Island is the most northerly island of the Seychelles Archipelago and is situated 60 miles from the main island of Mahé. A short 30 minute flight from Mahé by light aircraft takes you to the island and this family owned eco lodge.

Bird Island Lodge offer spacious 24 individual bungalows located on the stunning white beach.

Famous for its variety of bird-life this island is perfect for bird watching, swimming and snorkeling.. Esmeralda, one of the resident giant tortoise is approximately 200 years and weights 320 kilos - dimensions which has earned him a place in The Guinness Book of Records.

We love: the slow pace and idyllic beach; going on the nature walk and learning about medicinal uses of island plants and endemic birds; the simple and relaxed atmosphere.

Eco friendly highlights:

All hot water is produced by individual solar panels for each chalet. They have no outdoor lighting and provide clients with battery-free torches to use to get to the bar and restaurant at night. This eco lodge do not have any air conditioning, fridges, televisions etc in the rooms and so the power usage per chalet is kept to a minimum of lighting only.

Currently they are are focusing on programs to monitor and protect the Sooty Terns which breed on the island in their millions during Mar-Oct, the Green and Hawksbill Turtles which also come to the island to lay their eggs, the long tailed white tropic bird which nests on the ground next to trees, the newly introduced Seychelles sun birds which was trans-located from the main island in February 2006. They do also offer research students a free stay for a week or more on the island in return for a final copy of their study.

Fish is often the main dish and is caught locally by their fisherman.

Bird Island Eco Lodge has their own organic farm watered by their own collected rainwater. Composting system is in place. Rain water is also collected for drinking water and treated with UV lights.

They have had a policy for over 35 years to only employ local staff. As an island destination the staff live and work on the island. They provide free accommodation and food and staff with children are allowed to keep their children living with them until the law regulates that they must be educated on the main island. They have a policy of allowing the older children up to the island for weekends and holidays when there is space available on the aircraft and we do not charge their staff for this. They also offer the staff monetary loans if they want to build a house for themselves on the main island and do not charge them interest. The staff is actively involved in the conservation projects and the conservation officer is responsible for educating new members of staff about their surroundings and the work that we do on the island to conserve this habitat.

Cousine Island Eco Lodge

Cousine Island is one of the 155 islands that make up the Seychelles islands. The island is recognized  to be one of the most ecologically important private islands in the world. The four exclusive villas on Cousine ensure that there are no more than ten guests on the island at any time ensuring that human impact is strictly controlled and minimized. Cousine Island can only be reached by helicopter and it is this seclusion that makes it such an attractive haven for people wanting absolute privacy.

We love: The complete seclusion. The amazing wildlife, hundreds of different birds, lizards and giant tortoises wandering free on the island.

All Buildings feature rainwater catchments with extensive storage facilities. They recycle wherever possible, use bio degradable cleaning agents, source food locally and grow their own organic garden.
